READING FILM GENRES

In order to create an artistic masterpiece, we must be aware of its elements. So let’s talk about them.

                  1.Mis-en-Scene:

Mis-en-Scene is a French word that literally means ‘setting the stage’. Simply said, it refers to the stage design and arrangements of actors in scenes. Everything that makes up a single shot, is known as ‘Mis-en-Scene’. So, what are the factors that make up Mis-en-Scene?

1. Costume

2. Props

3. Actors’ positioning in a shot

4. Acting (performance)

5. Lights (intensity, direction, colour)

6. Character

7. Background

8. Production design

These are the fundamental elements of mis-en-scene. Now let’s talk about Sound Design.

                     2.Sound Design:

Designing the sound in such a way that it not only fits the visual movement, but actually helps raise the interest of the viewer, is a much needed skill for successful film makers. Other then it’s psychological benefits, sound is a powerful tool that can be used to make the viewer be fully engrossed in the movie.

Sound has different types. The main ones are as follows:

   1. Diegetic Sound:

Diegetic sounds refers to sound which is from within the film world. For easier understanding, any sound that a movie character can hear is diegetic. An example of Diegetic sounds is a person in the movie  hearing a sound of a police car.

    2. Non-Diegetic sound:

Refers to sounds that are not from within the film world, in other words sounds that can only be heard by us and not the characters.

So that is it for Sound Design, now let’s move down to our next aspect, Cinematography.

                3.Cinematography:

So basically, cinematography refers to study of camera angles in relation with lighting. It consist of 6 factors.

1. Shot size
2. Lighting
3. Shot composition
4. Camera focus
5. Camera movement
6. Camera placement

So the last, but not least element we will be talking about is Editing.

                    4.Editing:

What is editing? One might ask, editing is the art of cutting and assembling a finished film. Mostly done post-production, it holds an immense value in the final product.

By editing, you can effect the tempo, atmosphere, narrative, music and other elements. Moreover, the relationship between each shot can be

     1. Rhythmic

     2. Spatial

     3. Temporal

     4. Graphic

Editing is closely done in collaboration with the producer and the director, in order to ensure that a refined final product is formed.

So those are the main elements of a film. And we, as a team, will be using each element to its maximum potential. So stay with us on our journey. See you in the next blog post !
